Divergence between major central banks was the news of the week, as the Bank of Japan surprised markets with more easing, the Bank of England held steady and European Central Bank officials discussed their comfort with additional easing, if it was required.

Fed Stays the Course While Watching Global Events

In its January 27 meeting the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) members indicated that they expected economic data to be supportive of further tightening, but they continue to remain data dependent. U.S. employment – a primary focus of the FOMC – continued to improve. While realized inflation is low, they pointed out that inflation expectations have remained relatively stable.
